In 2018, the USA Federal Trade Commission (FTC) updated its Jewelry Guides, transforming how lab-grown diamonds are classified and described. These changes reflect a fundamental shift—lab-grown diamonds are now officially recognized as genuine diamonds, holding the same status as mined diamonds. The FTC acknowledges that, regardless of origin, both lab-grown and mined diamonds share identical chemical, physical, and optical properties.

 

This update dismantles outdated perceptions that lab diamonds are “synthetic” or inferior. Now, retailers are encouraged to market lab-grown diamonds as equal to mined diamonds, provided their creation process is disclosed. With this newfound recognition, lab-grown diamonds are positioned to offer consumers the same brilliance, durability, and authenticity—but with the added benefit of affordability and sustainability.
